Located on Jack's Lake in North Kawartha, Armstrong Island is a densely wooded and secluded place that hints at the promise of storybook adventure. Wayback was asked to create a special retreat for a young family of four and all their friends and family. We responded by turning the entire island into a camp that might have been dreamed up by kids - spaces for gathering, hiding, exploring and maybe even pirates! We proposed a central cottage hidden in the trees on top of the island overlooking a bunkie, boat house and outbuildings with long views down the lake. We tried hard to site the buildings to reinforce and reveal the character of the island. The buildings themselves are a fun take on traditional A-frame structures with carefully scaled spaces for reading, sleeping, family gatherings and meals, all anchored by a huge stone fireplace.
